Vessels

Who better to tell the story of ages than those who’ve held the Earth tightly in their grasp? Clutching the secrets of seasons and centuries. Cradling color. Time. Treasure.

These keepers of history and heritage are actually roots of trees. Writing in ringed-lines and sap stains, they’ve become the natural world’s most unassuming scribes.

Only like souls could coax from these massive woods their stories. And these souls do exist. We know because we’ve met them. They are a family of artisans. A father and his sons. Javier. Rodrigo, Pablo, and Alejandro. Each a thoughtful listener. Attentive to the lives lived in each tree and recorded in their roots.

“For what nature chooses to communicate, we are the vessels,” summarizes Rodrigo about his family’s vocation. He speaks from the heart about honoring the Earth and how his father’s love for the forests is apparent in and essential to their work.

Pablo works alongside Javier designing and creating new pieces, intent on giving these roots new shape. “We honor traditions and carry them forward in our own way,” he says. Alejandro designs, as well, repurposing excess fragments to craft decorative accents by hand.

Just as these woody stems have long provided stability and grounding, the belief system that Javier has instilled in his sons carries that same depth and purpose. One that lives on in their work. In the creation of these artful pieces. Pieces to admire. To sit with. To run our hands over. Forever furnishing a natural connection between their storied lives and ours.

Renewed, these roots resume their duties. Giving structure and substance to spaces. Reaching for window-cast sun rays. Lifting potted green leaves.

Rooted once again, they stand. Observing. Serving. Given, by a craftsman and his sons,
new life experiences to have and to hold.
